Dubai is considered a tax haven. That's largely true for individuals, but companies face clear rules. We separate myth from reality so you don't walk into an expensive trap.

What is actually tax-free

  • No personal income tax on salaries, dividends or capital gains.
  • No tax on private rental income or trading cryptocurrencies, provided your residence is in the UAE.
  • No inheritance or wealth tax at the federal level.

What companies still pay

  • 5% VAT above AED 375,000 taxable turnover.
  • 9% Corporate Tax on profit above AED 375,000.
  • License fees, visa and government fees apply independently of taxes.

The residence trap for expats

Anyone who has a company in Dubai but is still registered in Germany, Austria or Switzerland generally remains liable to tax there. Tax exemption only applies once your center of life and tax residence actually move to the UAE. This should absolutely be clarified with a tax advisor in your home country.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to file a tax return in Dubai if I pay no income tax?

As an individual, no. But your company must file VAT and Corporate Tax returns depending on turnover, even if the tax burden is low.

Is my income from Dubai taxed in my home country?

That depends on your tax residence. As long as your center of life is in your home country, your income is usually taxable there. Have this checked individually.
